What is anxiety?
Have you ever felt nervous before a test or a big game? Sometimes it can feel like you have some energy you can’t get rid of and you’re thinking a lot..maybe short of breath? That’s anxiety. It’s normal. It happens when your brain goes into fight or flight mode. Fight or flight keeps us alive. It’s what keeps us safe.
If you have an anxiety disorder your brain goes into fight or flight when it’s not necessary, kind of like a false alarm. There are different anxiety disorders including Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), Panic disorder, Phobic disorders, such as agoraphobia and social phobia, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Sometimes anxiety starts out of nowhere and some people have panic attacks. Panic attacks can feel like intense worry, shakiness, like you can’t breathe. It can be so scary people think they’re dying. Good news is you cannot die from having anxiety or a panic attack. More good news…there is medication and therapy that can help quite a bit.
Twenty Øne Piløts did a good job explaining it.
